The plains, prairies, and lakes of the Midwest have inspired many authors to write novels set in states like Ohio or Nebraska or everywhere in between.

Pick up one of these novels to visit the frontier of Lake Michigan in the late 1800s or stop by a small town in Illinois or experience a Minnesotan winter. The characters in the books below remind us that the Midwest isn’t “flyover country,” it’s a place where people help one another, work together, and share meaningful stories.

No matter if you’ve lived in the Midwest or always wanted to visit, these are the novels for you!

If you’re participating in the Crazy4Fiction Reading Challenge, pick a book to fulfill the set in a state you haven’t lived in prompt!
