Espionage and intelligence work have always fascinated me, and I don\u2019t think I\u2019m alone in that. We\u2019re always intrigued by secret things, clandestine meetings, hidden identities, and the thought of covert actions taken for noble purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more I\u2019ve studied real historical spy rings and intelligence organizations for my novels, however, the more I\u2019ve come to realize that the thing I love best about the most successful intelligencers throughout history is that they were just ordinary people who stepped up to do extraordinary work when their country needed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is certainly true of Marie-Madeleine Fourcade. As I was researching the French intelligence community during World War II for another book, I ran into the story of this amazing young woman. She was a talented musician, an adventure seeker who gave up her dreams of attending a conservatory to marry an army officer. Marie-Madeleine, however, soon discovered she wasn\u2019t the ideal officer\u2019s wife; she wasn\u2019t great at sitting on the sidelines and focusing on their home and the two children they had. And when war broke out and France surrendered to Nazi Germany, she couldn\u2019t just sit back and let the country she loved become something she hated. She wanted her children to grow up in a free France. And so, though her husband surrendered, she did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In The Spy Keeper of Marseille<\/a><\/em>, I started with the real adventures and exploits of Marie-Madeleine Fourcade but fictionalized them for the sake of a narrative compact enough to fit in a single novel. My fictional version, the widowed Zelie Bellerose, borrows much of her personality, circumstances, and situations from Marie-Madeleine, but I compressed a lot of details, especially when it came to making the cast of characters small enough not to be confusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a time when women were not accepted in most professions in France and certainly not in the military, this mold-shattering woman became the right hand of another military officer known as \u201cNavarre,\u201d who began an intelligence network before the Nazi invasion. They began recruiting other military men to join them after the surrender, Navarre always making it clear that if the recruits weren\u2019t willing to answer to Marie-Madeleine, then they weren\u2019t welcome in the organization. While Navarre focused on risky operations including a coup, she focused on building the network they dubbed Alliance and setting up communications with Britain\u2019s MI6. And when Navarre was arrested, this unlikely leader found herself in charge. She was dubbed la patronne<\/em> (\u201cthe boss\u201d) and kept Alliance running until the end of the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I loved learning about Marie-Madeleine and expounding on in my Zelie is the fact that she was never someone trained for this work\u2014she was simply someone willing to step up and do it. She had a fantastic memory and a way of grabbing attention when she entered a room, yes\u2014but none of that would have mattered if she\u2019d chosen to focus on herself instead of a greater cause. Though she was never convinced she was the \u201cman for the job,\u201d she did the work anyway. Day in, day out, even when it meant sending her children out of the country to keep them safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alliance faced betrayal, la patronne<\/em> had some harrowing near misses and escapes, and there were many days when they wondered if what they were doing was worth it. But always, she came back to a truth that is, I think, why we love stories like hers so much: Life asks difficult things of all of us\u2014and when we decide to say \u201cyes,\u201d we can quite literally write our own life\u2019s story . . . and change the world as we do.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
