Let\u2019s talk about inspiration. For writers especially, it seems that inspiration can come from a variety of sources. From a family member, to a cause, to even a memory, inspiration can be found at any time or place. <\/b><\/p>\n

Today we have author Jolina Petersheim, author of The Outcast<\/i> and The Midwife<\/i>, sharing her musical inspiration\u2014the playlist that helps her through rough times and writer\u2019s block (or did before toddler naptimes came into play!). Perhaps you\u2019ll find a song on her list that encourages you too. As a special treat, we\u2019re giving away a 25-dollar iTunes gift card. Two years ago, before my daughter, Miss A., was born, I could not write without some kind of instrumental music in the background, preferably a soundtrack.<\/p>\n

However, when Miss A.\u2019s napping, I would rather suffocate myself than give in to a cough or a sneeze or do something frivolous like run the washing machine, so I in no way risk listening to music in case it wakes her up.<\/p>\n

If I get to write at a coffee shop or out on the front porch, though, I still love delving into the soundtracks that are so inspirational when writing those beautiful, tension-filled scenes.<\/p>\n

Here are a few of my favorites:<\/p>\n

  1. Last of the Mohicans<\/i>: \u201cThe Kiss\u201d or \u201cPromentory\u201d (a slightly longer version with more instruments)I love this second song so much that I had a group of young violinists perform it while my husband and I were declared husband and wife. It was a beautiful moment.<\/li>\n
  2. Braveheart<\/i>: \u201cA Gift of a Thistle\u201d and \u201cFreedom\/The Execution\/Bannockburn\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. Gladiator<\/i>: \u201cElysium,\u201d \u201cHonor Him,\u201d and \u201cNow We Are Free\u201d<\/li>\n
  4. <\/i>Jane Eyre<\/i> (2011 version): \u201cWandering Jane\u201d and \u201cWaiting for Mr. Rochester\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/li>\n
  5. Sense and Sensibility <\/i>(1995 version): \u201cTo Die for Love\u201d and \u201cThere Is Nothing Lost\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    My best friend, Misty, and I have watched this film countless times over the years. I am most certainly Marianne and she is Elinor, but we\u2019re balancing each other more and more the older we get. (We\u2019ve been friends for twenty-five years.)<\/p>\n

    6. Pride and Prejudice<\/i>: \u201cLiz on Top of the World\u201d and \u201cDarcy\u2019s Letter\u201d<\/p>\n

    7. Titanic<\/i>: \u201cNever an Absolution\u201d and \u201cHymn to the Sea\u201d<\/p>\n

    8. Little Women<\/i>: \u201cOrchard House\u201d and \u201cFor the Beauty of the Earth\u201d (voice).<\/p>\n

    Misty (mentioned above) had \u201cFor the Beauty of the Earth\u201d performed at her wedding by a renowned group of vocalists. I was downstairs waiting for my cue to ascend, and\u2014holding my then-four-month-old daughter, the flower girl\u2014I started sobbing while listening to that song, remembering everything we had gone through to reach such a \u201csoundtrack-worthy\u201d moment in our lives. The Outcast<\/i>, my debut, is dedicated to Misty, a cancer survivor who\u2019s been in remission now for six years.<\/p>\n
