Often used as a focus for reflection on Good Friday, they are traditionally seen as having been spoken in the following order:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Words of Forgiveness:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cFather, forgive them, for they don\u2019t know what they are doing.\u201d (Luke 23:34)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Significance: Jesus fulfills his own teaching about loving one\u2019s enemies and shows that the cross is the basis on which divine forgiveness can be given.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nltblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Sad.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2405\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nltblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Sad-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Sad\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Words of Salvation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cI assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.\u201d (Luke 23:43)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Significance: Jesus shows that it is never too late to ask to be saved and find the assurance of eternal life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Words of Relationship:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cDear woman, here is your son. . . . Here is your mother.\u201d ( John 19:26-27)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Significance: Jesus, still thinking of others even in his agony, remembers the fifth commandment\u2014honor your parents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Words of Abandonment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cMy God, my God, why have you abandoned me?\u201d (Matthew 27:46)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Significance:\u00a0Quoting from Psalm 22, Jesus expresses his sense of complete desertion, even by his Father (because of the sin he was bearing).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nltblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/lightstock_405533_download_medium_user_5910588.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2696\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nltblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/lightstock_405533_download_medium_user_5910588-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"lightstock_405533_download_medium_user_5910588\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Words of Distress:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI am thirsty.\u201d ( John 19:28)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Significance: His body weakened by pain, blood loss, and dehydration, Jesus shows his true humanity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Words of Reunion:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFather, I entrust my spirit into your hands!\u201d (Luke 23:46)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Quoting from Psalm 31:5, Jesus entrusts himself to the Father, for what follows now lies entirely in his hands.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nltblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/StockSnap_QOXT1S9AQX.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2697\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nltblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/StockSnap_QOXT1S9AQX-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"StockSnap_QOXT1S9AQX\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Words of Triumph:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt is finished!\u201d ( John 19:30)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jesus proclaims victory at the moment of apparent defeat, declaring, \u201cIt is all accomplished!\u201d or even \u201cIt is all paid for!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As we reflect on Christ&#8217;s selfless sacrifice, we will use the The Christian Basics Bible\u00a0to mediate on the significance of Jesus&#8217; sayings from the cross.\u00a0 The Gospels record seven different sayings spoken by Jesus on the cross.
